Media Studies

 

Media Studies is an opportunity to study a wide range of media texts from film, television and radio to the internet. You will develop a range of skills which will enable you to analyse, explore and discuss the media, whilst also producing practical work.

 

What will I study?

 

WJEC A Level Media Studies is a 2 year course.

 

AS level – students will study how media texts are constructed and how audiences respond to and interpret them. Accompanying this is a practical coursework unit. Students will produce 3 pieces of linked work, consisting of written work and a practical piece such as an advert, film trailer, web site, or magazine.

 

A2 Level – students will study 3 different media industries from a selection including television, film, radio, music and computer games. A variety of texts will be studies for each of these industries. Coursework will be based on a media investigation and practical production piece.

 

How will I be assessed?

 

The course is completed over 2 years. 2 modules are completed each year. One exam based and one focused on practical coursework, equally weighted.

Career Opportunities

 

Media Studies is one of the fastest growing A Levels in Britain at the moment. Universities have responded with courses in Journalism, Photo Journalism, Television Studies, Film Studies and more technically driven options.

 

Media is a very competitive field, so do not think narrowly of it as a passport to a specific media-related career. It can also provide you with observational, analytical and creative skills which can support a career in any number of fields.
