KS5
Geography is an exciting and dynamic subject which addresses key ideas and debates in our world today. Whilst studying Geography you will develop fieldwork and research skills and gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of places and environments and the processes which bring about change.
What will I study?
The course we follow is Edexcel. This specification offers a balance of physical, human and environmental topics and adopts an enquiry based approach to the study of key geographical issues.
AS Level
This consists of two units.
Unit 1- Global Challenges explores the meaning, causes and impacts of a number of headline global issues. You will investigate topics such as natural hazards, climate change, globalisation and population migration.
Unit 2- Geographical Investigations will involve fieldwork, research and practical work into topics such as managing coasts, rebranding, rural and urban environments.
A2 Level
This consists of two units.
Unit 3- Contested Planet investigates the use and management of a range of different resources in today’s world. Increasing use and the finite nature of many resources means that difficult decisions will have to be made more frequently. The role of decision makers is also examined.
Unit 4- Geographical Research involves a detailed investigation into one topic from a range of options including physical, environmental, social and cultural geography.
How will I be assessed?
The AS course will be assessed by two examinations. Unit 1 is worth 60% of the AS total (30% of the GCE award) and Unit 2 is worth 40% (20% of the GCE award). Both units are examined in June of Year 12.
The A2 component is also assessed by means of two examinations. Unit 3 worth 30% of the total GCE award and Unit 4 is worth 20% of the total GCE award. Again, both units are examined in June of Year 13.
