


Food, Nutrition & Health (Home Economics)
This subject builds on the experience of your GCSE Home Economics: Food and Nutrition and allows you to further your studies in this subject area. Candidates will have an understanding of a variety of issues including nutrition, food production, food safety and hygiene, social and environmental issues and family and society issues.
What will I study?
This subject builds on the experience of your GCSE Home Economics: Food and Nutrition and allows you to further your studies in this subject area. Candidates will have an understanding of a variety of issues including nutrition, food production, food safety and hygiene, social and environmental issues and family and society issues. This course is made up of 4 units. To get a certificate of Advanced Subsidiary, you will need to have successfully completed 2 AS Units. To get a certificate of Advanced GCE, you will need to have successfully completed 2 AS Units, together with 2 A2 Units.
How will I be assessed?
The AS GCE is made up of two mandatory units which are both written papers and form 50% of the corresponding four-unit Advanced GCE.
The two AS Units are:
First Year (AS)
Society and Health – is an externally assessed unit and includes health, social and environmental issues, family and society and demography. This is worth 50% of the total AS GCE marks and is a 1.5 hour written paper, worth 75 marks.
Resource Management – is an externally assessed unit and includes food safety and hygiene, food provision and preparation, financial awareness and retailing. This is worth 50% of the total AS GCE marks and is also a 1.5 hour written paper, worth 75 marks.
Second Year (A2)
The A2 GCS consists of two mandatory units and form 50% of the corresponding four-unit Advanced GCE.
Investigative Study is an internally assessed unit and is of an investigative nature. Candidates select their own content and develop their own task to include practical work.
25% of the total Advanced GCE marks Coursework 100 marks.
This is a coursework unit. Candidates select their own content and develop their own task, up to 3000 words.
Nutrition and Food Production is an externally assessed unit and includes nutrients and energy, properties of food, dietary needs and development and production of food.
25% of the total Advanced GCE marks 1/5 hour written paper 75 marks

Career Opportunities
Throughout the course of study candidates are encouraged to develop an understanding of issues relating to Society and Health, Resource Management, Nutrition and Food Production as well as investigating an area of content in the Investigate Study. The specifications therefore provide a suitable foundation for the study of academic or vocational courses in Higher Education, including careers in Food Technology, Nutritional Science, Sports Science and Diet, Consumer Protection and Food Retail and Manufacture.
