Film Studies
We follow the WJEC Specifications for AS and A2 Level.
What will I study?
After a brief introduction to the history of film you will study the development of narrative structure and generic conventions. You will also study the practical considerations of film producers and their audiences and understand the business of film making. We will look in depth at underlying political and social messages of film. You will study some of the theoretical writing related to Spectatorship. At A2 level you will research the work of an auteur (director) of your choice. You will analyse World Cinema and the rise of Hollywood as the dominant form, as well as emotional response to film.
Assessment
The AS/A Level course is spread over two years and four modules. Two modules are taken each year. One is coursework based and the other is examined.
AS Coursework:
1 x 1500 word essay Micro analysis. (A detailed analysis of a film of your choice. A creative project comprising of storyboard/script and Evaluation

Career Opportunities
This is a fascinating subject in itself, but is directly useful in areas such as marketing and advertising, journalism, film making, scriptwriting and drama related careers. The high level of written expression and analytical ability required is also useful in many other careers. It will also give you a rich appreciation of cinema that will last for life.
