​Fashion & Textiles

 

This subject builds on the experience of your GCSE Design and Technology and allows you to further your studies in this subject area. This course is designed to encourage candidates to Develop a broad view of design and technology, Develop your capacity to design and make textile products, Appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing, Develop your own ideas through to final products, Helps students to develop further skills in decision making, creativity, and critical analysis through individual and collaborative working.

 

What will I study?

 

This subject builds on the experience of your GCSE in Design and Technology and allows you to further your studies in this subject area. This course gives candidates the opportunity to:

 

  •  Develop a broad view of design and technology

  •  Develop your capacity to design and make textile products

  •  Appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing

  • Develop your own ideas through to final products

  •  Helps students to develop further skills in decision making, creativity, and critical analysis through individual and collaborative working

 

The course is made up of 4 units.

It is helpful but not necessary for candidates to have studied GCSE Design and Technology before commencing work on this specification and no prior knowledge of Design and Technology is required for candidates to undertake a course of study based on this specification.

 

AS outline (Year One)

Candidates study and work with a variety of fabrics and components used in the design and making of textile products, working in both two and three dimensional forms. Candidates gain an understanding of industrial and commercial practices within the area of design and manufacture:

 

  • Unit 1 (TEXT1) Materials, Components and Application external assessment (2 hour exam paper). It introduces candidates to subjects such as understanding materials, production and the impact if cost and design.

  •  Unit 2 (TEXT2) Coursework: Learning through Designing and Making. Candidates will make one outcome accompanied with a portfolio of work. You will work on your own design with a range of materials and media.

 

A Level outline (Year Two)

The specification offers candidates the opportunity to further develop the knowledge and practical skills from AS. Candidates continue to design and manufacture textile products alongside an understanding of the processes and procedures of commercial textile manufacture:

 

  • Unit 3 (TEXT3) Design and Manufacture. This develops your holistic appreciation between design and technology or form and function via an external assessment (2 hour exam paper).

  • Unit 4 (TEXT4) Coursework: Design and Making in Practice. Candidates are to make one outcome accompanied with a portfolio of work, recording the processes you went through.

Career Opportunities

 

This course prepares learners to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and leads into a number of exciting career paths such as textile design, fashion design, fashion buying or marketing. Further education may include a university degree in fashion design, or clothing design and technology. You could also apply this A Level to your portfolio of skills as a teacher. This course goes well with subjects such as Art & Design, Business Studies and Computing.
