Key Stage 4

What will I study?
We offer three pathways when pupils move into Key Stage 4; GCSE Triple Science (Chemistry, Physics and Biology) alongside GCSE Core Science & GCSE Additional Science. Pupils following the Edexcel programme of study and are taught by subject specialists.
We also offer Level 2 OCR Cambridge Nationals in Science and Science in the Workplace which is a vocational course with a higher contribution from coursework to the final grade.
All pupils complete a course that provides a foundation of Scientific literacy during Key Stage 4. Courses provide opportunities to explore how Science works in the context of contemporary scientific issues such as global warming, future global and local energy supply and the ethics of genetic engineering.
How will I be assessed?
There are regular homework tasks set and graded end of topic tests which we will use to check pupil progress. Typically pupils will receive one homework per fortnight in each of the Sciences. We will also assess their literacy in Science in each topic by completing

There will be mock examinations in preparation for external examinations. For the external examinations in the summer different courses have different requirements. The Triple Science pupils will complete all 9 Science exams (3 for each Science) in June of Year 11. GCSE Core Science Pupils could complete their first GCSE in June of Year 10 if they are ready, with the GCSE Additional Science being completed in June of Year 11. Each GCSE has a 25% contribution from the Controlled Assessment coursework component.

Career Opportunities
The Sciences offer a way of thinking and problem solving that is vital in all workplaces. A good qualification in Science opens up a huge amount of jobs and professions. Clearly to meet the demand of the future there is a massive need to continue to produce Scientists in all areas and as such it is a valuable career pathway. Many Science students go onto study A-levels, degrees and then look to work at the cutting edge of their chosen specialism.
