YEAR 10
Students in year 10 study either a GCSE in Business Studies or an Extended Certificate in Business.  The department also offers a Level 1 BTEC course in Business Administration.

The GCSE students will study unit 1 – Business and People which will introduce them to a range of business concepts.  This includes ownership, recruitment and selection, communication and methods of motivation.  This unit will be examined at the end of year 11.  During year 10, GCSE Business Studies students will also study the theory content for unit 2 – Marketing and Enterprise and will start to prepare for work on their Controlled Assessment.  This will be completed during the early part of year 11.

The BTEC Extended Certificate students will study three units in year 10.  These will be unit 1 – Business Purposes; unit 2 – Business Resources and unit 3 – Financial Forecasting for Business.  Each unit has the same format and students will have both theory and research time as well as time to complete their assessment in lessons.  This internal, ongoing assessment forms the only assessment on this course.

Students who study the Level 1 BTEC Business Administration course will study a minimum of five units over the two years.  They will study a variety of business related issues, including health and safety, communication and financial documents.  Students will be assessed on the course by producing on-going coursework in lessons.

YEAR 11

GCSE students in year 11 will complete their Controlled Assessment work for unit 2 and will then go on to complete unit 3 – Production, Finance and the External Business Environment which is examined at the end of the year based on a pre-released case study.  Students will sit this at the end of year 11 along with the exam for unit 1.

BTEC students will complete an additional two units in year 11, with one of these carrying a double weighting towards their final assessment grade.  These units will maintain the same format as in year 10 and students will end the year with a completed portfolio of all five units of work graded to pass, merit or distinction.

Level 1 BTEC Business Administration students will complete their final units of study in year 11 and will finish the year with a completed portfolio with all five units being assessed to the required pass standard.
