ART
Do you enjoy practical work and learning about artists? Are you motivated in Art & Design, and enjoy taking risks with ideas/techniques? Are you good at using your creativity to develop personal ideas and responses? Do you love the visual arts and have dedication? If your answer to the above is “yes” then perhaps you should consider AS/A2 Art and Design.
What will I study?
We offer a broad approach which has drawing and painting at its centre, but which also includes photography, digital art, printmaking, mixed media and 3D work.
AS LEVEL
Unit 1 Coursework Portfolio
You will produce a portfolio of artwork which will be your response to a theme or topic that we will provide. Examples from previous years include such themes as “Yourself”, “Cubist Art” or “The Coastline.” Your portfolio will show how you have responded to the work of other artists and gallery visits are an essential part of this course.
Unit 2 AS Externally Set Assignment (exam)
This unit takes the form of a timed test (5 hours) responding to a theme set by the AQA exam board, where you produce preparatory studies leading to a finished piece of work. Again, you build on existing skills using relevant media of your choice.
A2 LEVEL
Unit 3 Personal Investigation
This is a practical unit with written work (1000-3000 words) in which candidates are expected to develop a personal investigation based on an idea, issue, concept or theme leading to a finished piece or pieces of artwork. The practical elements should be linked with some aspect of contemporary or past practice of artists, designers or craftspeople. You will have the chance to develop your work according to your own interests.
Unit 4 A2 Externally Set Assignment (exam)
This unit takes the form of a timed test (15 hours) responding to a theme set by the AQA exam board, where you produce preparatory studies leading to a finished piece of work. Again, you build on existing skills using relevant media of your choice.
